Introduction to Indian Tabla

with Steve Morley

Tabla is the name given to the pair of hand drums widely used across the Indian sub-continent, and this accessible and enjoyable workshop provides an ideal opportunity for complete beginners to experience and understand some of the many facets of classical tabla, and North Indian music in general. With an emphasis on playing and versatility, we will be looking at its unique language and structures, will learn basic phrasing, and follow recitals by some great Indian masters. There will also be new ideas and approaches for playing other drums and percussion. No musical experience is necessary.

Steve Morley first studied tabla in Benares India in the early 1980s with Pt. Chotilal Misra, and has also been under the tutelage of London-based tabla master Pt. Sharda Sahai. Steve has been teaching tabla and leading workshops and courses in Southern England since 1995.

Please bring comfortable clothing, a pen and notebook and lunch to share. Drums provided.

Sunday 15th June at Evolution
10.45 am - 4.45 pm

Cost: £45 (£35 concessions and earlybird) per day

Comments on Steve's workshop

Thanks for the day - it was all at once thrilling, therapeutic, demanding, disciplinary, moving and mathematical. I would love to learn Indian dance, tabla, sitar, Indian singing... it is all fascinating, beautiful and draws me. So thank you very much for an inspiring opportunity to get a little closer to the music of India!
