Expression through Portrait
with Katherine Griffin
This course will enable you to discover your artistic talents through
a range of media and challenging ideas. You will be given the opportunity
to express yourself and your interests, particularly through the use of
portraits. Materials will range from the traditional: oil paint, acrylics,
pen and ink to recycled everyday objects, old books, things found on the
floor, wool, wire, old clothes, sugar, food colorings, make-up. Each week
you will be introduced to a new concept and discover things about yourself
and art. The weeks will run up to creating a final image and you will
be taught how to stretch and prime a canvas.
Katherine studied at the Slade School of Fine art with artists Ewan Uglow
and Jenny Saville. She is a qualified art teacher and exhibits both locally
and nationally.

Acrylic inks: Daler Rowney – FW Acrylic Ink
Black Indian ink: We can split the cost of a bottle between us
We will be making our own mark making tools to draw with from ordinary
household objects, cotton buds, scourers, twigs, feathers, anything that
might make an interesting mark.
We will also be creating self portraits from old books, magazines, string
and make up – so collect these if you can.
A good selection of brushes:
For oils: filbert brushes
For acrylic and inks: softer brushes get 00 for detail.
Primer Brush
Sketchbook paper, pva glue, scissors
When it comes to stretching our own canvas, you can buy wood to make the
frames very cheaply and I advise you buy 10oz cotton duck. You will need
some gesso primer and the staple gun will be provided but if you do have
your own or feel it is something you will continue to do the best one
for the job I’ve found is in Clarkes stationers – you don’t
need anything too heavy duty for this. |
